Ch. 1 Transcendence After America is up
The First Amendment, Worship, and Need for a New Synthesis
The second paragraph gives a foretaste of the whole chapter:
“When human beings encounter a longing and desire within ourselves that nothing in this world can satisfy, upon deeper consideration, experience and seeking, we are brought to realize we are seeking to rest in the infinite goodness that is the cause of all things temporal. We are seeking the invisible and Eternal One who transcends this world of contingency and is the source of every goodness. Such longing in the depths of human souls caused Saint Augustine to pine, “Our hearts are restless until they rest in Thee.” The Lord Jesus, in the midst of his claims to divinity offered, “Come to me all you who are weary and heavy burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). The understanding of the goodness of desires – and how nature leads us to God – actually led C.S. Lewis to Christian faith. Desire needs discernment and not only discipline in order to find its true meaning.”
